Chapter Six

Another day, another bouquet.

“And you’re sure you have no idea who those are coming from?” Mom pressed me once more, launching into daytime-television detective mode just like that. I shook my head.

“If I did, I would remind them that the two of us could land in a lot of trouble,” I reminded her. She had started to get a touch misty-eyed at the prospect of someone sending me secret flowers, but I didn’t want my job in jeopardy.

“Oh, I’m sure that producer of yours understands how intense things can get.” Mom waved her hand, not wanting a little thing like reality to get in the way of how romantic she was finding all of this. “I’m sure she won’t punish you.”

“I’m pretty sure she’s fired people for less than this,” I groaned, fiddling with the petal of one of the dozen white roses that I’d been sent that morning. They had arrived at my trailer, and I was sure that people must have seen them making their way across the set. I had no doubt people would be talking about this. I knew I would be if I hadn’t been at the center of it.

“Well, you have contracts, don’t you?” Mom reminded me. “Make sure that agent of yours gets everything straight for you.”

Mom had met Kim when she had visited once, a few months ago, and she had been completely charmed by her. No matter how many times I tried to tell her that she was an agent and that she charmed the hell out of everyone, Mom insisted on bringing her up and asking after her every chance she got.

“Yeah, I’m sure she will,” I agreed, pinning the phone between my ear and my shoulder. “Can I call you back? I need to get ready to shoot. This whole thing has slowed me down a bunch.”

“Yeah, sure,” Mom agreed. “I’ve got to get dinner on anyway. I’ll see you later.”

“See you,” I replied, and hung up the phone. I stared at myself in the mirror, slathered in makeup, my hair slicked back once more, and then let my gaze creep back over to the white roses once more. I hoped that they might have disappeared, but nope – they were still right there.

So, who was it then? If it wasn’t Damien? It had to be someone who knew when I was going to be at the trailer and who had access to the address of my apartment that the studio had rented for me. I would have to do a little detective work. And make sure that this wasn’t just Kim fucking with me because it seemed like the kind of thing she would do for fun.

I left the roses out of the desk when I went out to shoot that day. They were beautiful, after all, and just because I didn’t know who had sent them didn’t mean I didn’t like them. In fact, they had reminded me instantly of Alina – not because I thought
